Experts have long advised that skincare regimen should change with the seasons so now that we’re deep into winter, a skincare update is due. This time of year, there’s a drop in humidity which makes skin dry; add in dry heat from central heating and dry, flaky skin emerges. So keeping skin moisturised and hydrated is important which is why moisturisers with hefty hydrating powers to replace the moisture lost in skin is key this time of year. Here are my favourite moisturisers that will save your skin in the cold months of winter. The good news is, there’s something for every budget after all, good skin isn’t just for the wealthy.
Speaking of affordable, they don’t come more affordable than the Neutrogena HydoBoost range. Made with the very popular hyaluronic acid which holds 1000x its weight in water; it’ll keep your skin hydrated round the clock. The range is very extensive, it includes cleansers, toners and body moisturisers to mention a few but if I had to choose the one product you should stick to in these skin drying months ahead, I’d pick the Hydrating Water Gel. It is soothing, hydrating and quenches thirsty skin almost as soon as it’s applied.
Dove DermaSpa Oxygen Touch
Dove’s DermaSpa range isn’t new, and I’ve tried almost the entire range but by far, my favourite is the Oxygen Touch duo of Cloud Cream and Body Lotion. Both contain Dove’s signature Cell Moisturisers which penetrates the skin’s layers to hydrate it around the clock. It’s light to touch, hence the name ‘Oxygen Touch’; absorbs into skin very easily and as soon as it touches skin, you can see the hydrating effect almost immediately. It’s suitable for all skin types and definitely recommended for this time of year.
Indeed Labs Hydraluron Moisture Jelly
Hyaluronic Acid in jelly form, what’s not to like? This moisturiser is filled hyaluronic acid and PatchH20™ technology and works to combat dullness, dehydration, dryness and signs of premature ageing by providing the skin with instant and long lasting hydration.
The high molecular weight of hyaluronic acid allows the jelly to form a protective layer on the skin’s surface to lock in hydration and prevent moisture evaporation. It really is one of the best moisturisers for dry skin. It’s light, absorbs quickly and saturates skin with hydration; leaving it soft, smooth, plump and radiant.
Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Fresh Watery Cream
This Korean natural skincare brand has tons of moisturisers that are super hydrating. They call it watery creams which means they are watery in texture and feel watery on skin so they are not as thick as other moisturisers. This cream is cooling on skin, absorbs very quickly without leaving any residue and keeps skin hydrated 24hrs a day. It contains deep ocean water from Kona Hawaii which provides steady moisture and marine ingredients from the Polynesian Lagoon which is all good for skin this time of year.
Olay Whip Light as Air Touch Active Moisturiser
This moisturiser is the day time accompaniment to the Olay Regenerist Overnight Miracle Firming Mask or as I call it, wrapping your skin in silk overnight. I’m a big fan of the overnight Mask and this Air Touch Active Moisturiser doesn’t disappoint either.
As the name mentions, it’s light and very easily absorbed. It’s an anti-ageing moisturiser that effectively firms and reduces the look of wrinkles. It is uniquely whipped with moisture so that it transforms from cream to liquid as soon as it touches skin.
Polaar Eternal Snow Cream
I’m a big fan of this Nordic skincare brand. I love the texture of their creams and the ingredients. This one, in particular, is cool to touch and almost flaky on skin but once rubbed in, it really penetrates and mattifies skin.
I love the ingredients too, this cream is fortified with nunatak, an arctic flower that survives extreme climatic conditions. It’s fast-absorbing, reduces signs of ageing, minimises redness and erases imperfections to reveal a smoother, healthy-looking appearance.
Another reason why I love this cream is that it is multitasking. It works to increase suppleness and elasticity, whilst restoring comfort and deeply moisturising skin to revive radiance. It also improves the natural barrier function of the epidermis, delivering intense hydration and eliminating toxins to reignite a natural glow. As moisturisers go, this is hitting the jackpot. It’s been in my winter skincare rotation as I battle the current weather conditions, not to mention the dryness from leaving the central heating on 24/7.
CBeautyDifferently CBD Cannabalm
CBD infused products generally are multi-purpose and solve a lot of skincare problems because the hemp used to produce CBD is so rich in the many nutrients our skin needs. This one, in particular, is very effective in hydrating skin while bringing out its radiance almost immediately. Derived from CBD Oil and Marula Oil – a ‘super’ oil with 60% more antioxidants than Argan Oil; this CBD Cannabalm also reduces the appearance of fine lines. As a skin hydrator, this Cannabalm has multi-uses including as a moisturiser on the face to plump up dry skin and to heal spots and acne.
Rabot 1745 Cacao & Shea Butter
Body butters come in different flavours at Rabot 1745 but the Cacao and almond is my favourite. It tastes great in chocolate and feels even better on skin, not to mention smells great. Considering how hydrating it is, this body butter is light and absorbs very easily into skin, leaving it soft and supple. The ingredients also contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which is always good in any skincare product.
GlamGlow Moisture Trip
By far the thickest moisturiser on this list. GlamGlow Moisture Trip is rich in moisturisers and can definitely hold its own in the hydration department. It contains cannabis stavia, a hemp seed oil that nourishes skin’s barrier, chaga mushroom, an antioxidant which protects skin against blue exposure and one of my favourite skincare ingredients of all time, hyaluronic acid for lasting hydration.
The thickness of MoistureTrip reminds me of a really soothing and hydrating night time mask but for any time of day.
It’s impressive how MoistureTrip manages to be very rich while being very light on skin at the same time. It absorbs very quickly when applied and leaves no residue. It’s light enough that you don’t have to worry about clogged pores when applying makeup on top of it.
Making sure your skin is well hydrated during winter isn’t just about keeping dry skin at bay, a well hydrated skin also fights wrinkles and plumps out skin giving it a youthful look. So a good hydrating moisturiser serves two purposes here and my picks range from very affordable to mid-priced and are available wherever skincare is sold.
There’s something for every budget, after all good skin isn’t just for the wealthy.
