Clapham South dinner review

Mate’s Restaurant Clapham South – A Laid-Back Evening of Great Flavours

When it comes to dining out in London, it’s easy to get swept up in the energy of buzzy neighbourhoods like Clapham Junction. But just a few stops away, Clapham South offers a calmer, leafier alternative, the kind of place where you can enjoy a great meal without the rush. That’s exactly what I found at Mate’s Restaurant, a stylish yet relaxed spot just a three-minute walk from Clapham South tube station.

With its mix of outdoor and indoor seating, friendly staff, and a menu packed with fresh, flavourful dishes, Mate’s is the kind of place that makes you want to linger. I visited to explore their brand-new dinner menu (just three weeks old), and left feeling both impressed and pleasantly full.

Nestled among a row of restaurants and cafés, Mate’s Restaurant enjoys a prime yet peaceful spot in Clapham South. Being only a short three-minute stroll from the tube station makes it effortlessly accessible, whether you’re a local or visiting from elsewhere in London.

On a warm summer evening, the outdoor seating area is hard to resist. It’s perfect for soaking up the last rays of sunshine and watching the world go by. The atmosphere is laid-back, with background music setting a pleasant tone without overpowering conversation. Inside, the décor is stylish yet welcoming, making it just as inviting for cooler months.

While the street location means you might occasionally hear the wail of an ambulance or the hum of passing traffic, the overall vibe remains calm and relaxed – ideal for a leisurely dinner.

Service

The service at Mate’s Restaurant strikes a great balance between attentiveness and friendliness. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome, offering menus promptly and checking in without being intrusive.

Once we placed our order, the food arrived quickly; in fact, almost all at once rather than course by course. On the plus side, this meant no long waits between dishes and we could dive straight into our meal. However, it also meant some items cooled a little before we got to them. That said, the speed and efficiency showed that the kitchen is well-organised, and the staff ensured we had everything we needed throughout the evening.

The Food & Drinks

Mate’s Restaurant’s new dinner menu is a feast of vibrant flavours and creative combinations. We started with a round of drinks; an Old Fashioned, a buttery Italian Chardonnay, and a smooth Pinot Noir – each perfect for sipping in the warm summer air.

The starters set the tone for the evening. The Tempura Prawn Tacos came loaded with guacamole, pickled red onions, cherry tomato, avocado mayo, and a sriracha kick – fresh, zesty, and moreish. The Beetroot Carpaccio was a colourful surprise, while the Padrón Peppers with Smashed Feta had just the right level of smokiness and heat. The Corn Ribs, dusted with Parmesan, chives, garlic, and smoked paprika, were sweet, savoury, and addictive, and the Steamed Broccoli with mirin, soya, garlic, and chilli flakes brought a fragrant, umami-rich punch.

For mains, the Ribeye Steak with grilled vegetables and peppercorn sauce was a standout, cooked to perfection, tender, and packed with flavour. The Salmon with wheat mixed vegetables and celeriac purée offered a lighter yet equally satisfying option, with the creamy purée complementing the delicate fish beautifully.

Dessert was a refreshing finale: the Sorbetto, featuring lemon sorbet and a unique Aperol Spritz sorbet. The latter was a delightful twist, its bittersweet citrus notes providing a grown-up, palate-cleansing finish.

Atmosphere

Mate’s Restaurant in Clapham South has mastered the art of creating a space that feels both stylish and laid back. The leafy, quieter streets of Clapham South already set a relaxed tone, and being just a three-minute walk from the tube makes it effortlessly accessible.

I chose to sit outside to make the most of the summer weather, where the gentle hum of conversation mixed with soft background music created a warm, welcoming vibe. While the occasional siren from the nearby road served as a reminder that we were still in London, it didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the evening.

Inside, the décor is modern and comfortable, with attentive staff ensuring that guests feel looked after without being rushed. Even after we’d finished our meal, there was no push to vacate the table. Instead, we were encouraged to relax, chat, and savour the evening breeze.

Final Verdict

Mate’s Restaurant in Clapham South delivers a dining experience that balances flavour, presentation, and atmosphere with ease. The new menu is a confident mix of fresh, vibrant starters, hearty mains, and a few creative surprises like the Aperol Spritz sorbet, that make the meal truly memorable.

The service is friendly and efficient, with staff who are attentive without being intrusive. While the speed of the food arriving all at once meant some dishes cooled quicker than I’d like, the quality and taste more than made up for it.

For those looking for a relaxed evening away from the bustle of central London or Clapham Junction, Mate’s is an excellent choice. Whether you’re after a casual drink and nibbles or a full three-course dinner, this is a spot worth returning to –  especially in the warmer months when outdoor dining shines.
