Top tips for achieving a perfect fit.

Sewing Tips from Simplicity:

Searching for the perfect fit can be a tricky task, with many high street outfits not catering for the fact that women come in different shapes and sizes. Inspiring fashion lovers to embrace the current sewing revival and create beautifully fitted garments is Wendy Gardiner- sewing advisor to sewing pattern experts, Simplicity.

Here are figure flattering tips from Wendy on how to achieve a perfect fit:

Create a fitted top:

If your measurements don’t fall into a standard size group, then learning the skills to alter a sewing pattern is a must- ensuring that you never have to squeeze yourself into an ill fitting garment again. If you are big busted, make sure you choose your pattern size by your ‘high bust’ measurement (taken around the body, under the arms but above the bust). You will need to make adjustments for the fuller bust, but the pattern will fit better around the back, shoulders and chest- making it look and feel much better.

Opt for a stream-line skirt:

For skirts with gathers or pleats around the waist – minimize the bulk by stitching part way down pleats. Not only will this create a flattened look around the tummy but it will also draw attention towards the slimmer part of your body. Another top tip is to leave out any side pockets, which can appear bulky and add unwanted width to the hips.

Use forgiving fabrics:

The beauty of sewing is that you have complete control over what colour, texture or print you use. If you are looking for a comfortable fit, then use stretchy fabrics. Not only are they easier to fit but are more comfortable to wear!

TOP TIP: When using stretchy fabrics, remember to use a ball point needle, sewing all horizontal seams with a stretch stitch or small zigzag stitch so they can stretch with the fabric.

Find a figure flattering design:

When choosing a sewing pattern, always opt for a flattering design- highlighting your best bits and hiding any problem areas. Simplicity’s collection spans waist accentuating tea dresses, through to long sleeved work dresses, great for those conscious of their arms.

TOP TIP: Simplicity’s Amazing Fit 1586 pattern with contrasting side panels is a very flattering option. Created with specially designed patterns and silhouettes and separate bodice pattern pieces to accommodate every shape, the side panels draw the eye downwards to create the ever popular hourglass shape and is available in UK sizes 10- 28.

If you fall into the plus size range, then take a look at Simplicity’s collection- spanning a range of styles from A-line tunics to waterfall cardigans and three-quarter length skirts.
