Thai New Year or Songkran will be bringing colour and fun to London with a two day celebration this weekend.
The event organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will transform St Martins Courtyard in Covent Garden into Thailand with beautifully decorated lanterns, water themed features such as traditional blessings, and a mouthwatering array of Thai food inspired by Bangkok’s famous street food culture.
Visitors will be able to experience a truly Thai welcome by having relaxing spa massages and delicious Thai food and drinks including street food carts selling snacks and dishes by SUDA Thai restaurant and Thailand’s very own refreshing beer Chang as well as Singha beer and Monsoon Valley Wine.
Songkran in London is a chance to experience Thai culture without the travel miles. With fun activities like Thai fruit carving and garland making, two traditional Thai crafts and a chance to take photos in an authentic Thai tuk-tuk pictured at the Grand Palace Bangkok, it’s a perfect way to enjoy the weekend with friends and family.
If you are a big fan of Thai food, you can also buy a Thai Taste meal kit so you can take the taste of Thailand home with you to enjoy!
Songkran festival which takes place from 13th – 15th April each year takes place at the peak of the summer heat wave in Thailand so celebrations are water filled to commemorate the importance of water in Thai social, cultural and spiritual life. This is usually symbolized with large scale water fights in streets and parks, water theme parks and gardens, among others.
While Songkran celebrations in London will be low key compared to events in Thailand, the activities will be no less fun and a must visit if you have the time
