For the first time in years, I’ve been able to stick to a New Year’s resolution of getting fit. I’m 7 weeks into an 8 week running program.
To get to this point, I’ve had to do a lot of work on my mindset. Getting out of the house to get to the gym has always been a struggle. But every time I managed to make it to the gym, doing the work came easy. So getting out of the house was key.
My fitness journey began with power walking on a treadmill, then running for a minute and walking for two minutes, and now, I’m able to run continuously for 30 minutes.
The work of getting to this point has been down two things; one, creating and sticking to the habit of working out by using Atomic Habits, a book by James Clear. The book uses things like desire and rewards as well as creating environments conducive to the habit you’re trying to cultivate to get it done.
I’d highly recommend this book for any habit you want to cultivate or any goal you want to achieve.
Two, having the right workout music. It’s taken me a while to find the right tunes with the right tempo to run to. I made a workout playlist but I found that running to the same tunes regardless of how good they were, did get boring after a while, as I was on the treadmill at least three days a week.
My solution was to create two thirty minute workout playlists with my favourite workout tunes so I can alternate between them and keep things fresh. Below is a list of timeless workout music that never goes out of style regardless of the year and has the right tempo that will have you zoned out and working out effortlessly.

My top 15 workout tunes:
8 Mile – Eminem
Clap Back – Ja Rule
X Gon’ Give It To Ya – DMX
X – Xzibit
U Can’t Touch This – MC Hammer
Survivor – Destiny’s Child
Headlines – Drake
Get Ur Freak On – Missy Elliot
Hey Ya! – OutKast
Happy – Pharrell Williams
Lean Back – Terror Squad
Tambourine – Eve
Hair – Little Mix feat Sean Paul
Written in the Stars – Tinie Tempah
Ma’ Be Easy – Fabolous
