It might not look like it but now that February has ended, spring is closer than ever; and if you’re like me, you haven’t been giving your feet a lot of thought.
And I won’t blame you for that. It’s been a long winter and our feet have been covered in tights and cosy booties for months. Every year, some of us leave it late to get our feet ready for sandal season which sees us feeling unprepared to wear the appropriate footwear and embarrassed of our feet.
This year, let’s get a jump on things by starting a foot care routine early so that come spring, you’ll be ready to display your feet without guilt or shame, and the best thing is you can do this routine at home once a week between now and spring so no need to spend money at the salon – unless you want to.
The 4 steps for spring-ready feet
One of the first steps I’ll recommend for starting a foot care routine to get your feet ready for spring is to exfoliate. There are several foot scrubs on the market that will help you get rid of all the dead, hard skin that has accumulated on your feet over the winter months but I’d recommend foot exfoliating socks. This is because they are stronger and more effective and get the job done in one sitting. Foot exfoliating socks contain a special solution including Glycolic acid and other skin softening ingredients that break down the hard skin and remove it.
You typically have to wear foot exfoliating socks for 60 minutes and sometimes wait up until a week for all the hard skin to peel off your feet. It is a long process and not pretty to look at but it will get your feet baby soft and make you start counting the days till spring so you can show it off.
Tip: It’s advisable to use the foot exfoliating socks every 2-3 months to ensure perpetual soft feet all year round.
Now that the dead skin is off your feet, you should keep a routine of weekly foot soaks to keep your feet and nails soft and smooth. This will also ensure that the hard skin doesn’t build up too quickly in between foot exfoliations. One of my favourite foot soaks is from Avon and Carnations. You can finish off your foot soak by wearing Moisturising Gel Socks nightly to keep your feet constantly soft and hydrated.
After a weekly foot soak is a perfect time to treat your nails if needed. Whatever the issue – fungal nail issues, discoloured nails, weak and brittle nails; this is the time to treat them as you have time before the spring sunshine rears its head. There are several topical creams on the market to treat fungal nails, for discoloured nails, you can try Carnation Toenail Solution and for weak and brittle nails, Butter London has a very effective nails treatment range that will hydrate, strengthen and grow your nails.
Once your nails are looking strong and healthy, it’s time to shape or style them and choose your favourite nail varnish to complete your feet’s transformation. Salon nail brand KISS now have a 20 piece mani/pedi set that has all the tools you’ll need to shape and style your nails.
Like most routines, the more you do it, the better the results. If you stick to this routine weekly between now and spring, your feet will be ready for sandals season come spring and summer.
