How to choose sunscreen products
With Skin cancer as the fastest growing and number one form of cancer in the UK, using the right sun protection sunscreen has never been more important.
But with so many sun protection sunscreen products on the market, choosing one isn’t as simple as it used to be.
Here are tips for choosing sun protection sunscreen products
Think Broad-Spectrum:
Normal sunscreens shield you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays but fail to protect from UVA rays which causes cancer. To be on the safe side, choose either broad-spectrum or multi-spectrum for protection from both UVB and UVA.
SPF 15 or higher for UVB protection:
The SPF factor rates how effective the sunscreen is in preventing sunburn caused by UVB rays. For the vast majority of people, SPF 15 is fine but if you burn faster than most or have very fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, or conditions like lupus that increase sensitivity to sunlight, you should consider SPF 30 or higher.
Water and sweat resistance:
If you’re going to be exercising or be in the water, it’s worth getting a sunscreen resistant to water and sweat. Water and sweat resistant sunscreens are in no way water-proof, so you’ll need to reapply them regularly if you’re taking a dip.
Child-friendly:
The sensitive skin of babies and children is easily irritated by chemicals in adult sunscreens so choose child specific sunscreen products as adult sunscreen contain ingredients that may be harmful to a child.
Skin problems or allergies:
If you have allergies or sensitive skin or skin conditions like rosacea, it is advisable to go with sunscreens designed for children. If you have skin irritation or allergies, avoid sunscreens with alcohol, fragrances, or preservatives.
